The Amazon Breakthrough Novel competition is back, and offering two categories: general fiction and young adult fiction. If you win, you’ll receive a publishing contract from Penguin, and a $15,000 advance. You need to enter your manuscript, a 300-word pitch and a 3,000-5,000 word excerpt.
The first round is decided on a 300-word pitch of your manuscript. The team at Amazon will select the strongest 1000 pitches for each category. The second round requires a 5,000 word excerpt of your novel, and is decided by Amazon top customer reviewers who will choose the the 250 best pitches in each category.
The Publishers Weekly reviewers will read the full manuscripts of the remaining entries (250 per category) and the 50 best-scoring manuscripts are then judged by Penguin USA editors. The Penguin USA editors will select the best three, and then Amazon customers will vote on the three finalists to decide the the winners.
You can submit your manuscripts now, and entries close when Amazon receives 5,000 entries, or at 11.59 pm on 5 February 2012 (United States Eastern Standard Time). So if you’re thinking of entering, we recommend you enter as soon as your story is ready, because we don’t know exactly when the competition will close.
